The United Kingdom is full of Castles
Many are in ruins. Are you sure your families is on Loch Ness? Off hand I know of only Urqhuart Castle but maybe there is more than one. There are some really nice pictures of castles etc in Caithness at http://www.caithness.org.
This is further north than Loch Ness but both areas are considered Highlands. Scots - help the young fella out if you can. Welcome to S.com. A Scottish-Canadian Lady

I was hoping that someone could help me please? I come from the Macdonell clan--my great grandfather was born in Oct 1868 & passed away in November of 1934--Cameron Lundy Macdonell--his father was a govenor (I think ) at fort Tuscany in Canada-I dont know what year..to get to the point,( I'm trying to give general info to see if this rings any bells with anyone about my family..) I have a 2 part question ...3part acually...I'm not sure if this is ther original spelling of my clans name , & if it is can anyone tell me if I my family would be more considered from GLengarry or Kepparch if so for the family plaids? Also, does anyone have any information about the women of the clan? I would much appreciate it-I'm just starting to try to trace my geanology of my family tree & any help & advice on which way to go would be appreciated--I need all the help i can get!!! Many thanks!!! shannon

Shannon,
If you look around some of the other posts and replies on this website you'll find a lot of information on the MacDonells. Just a few pointers up front: Like a lot of the clan names, MacDonell, MacDonnell, Macdonald, McDonald etc are all English approximations to a Gaelic original. In Gaelic there is no difference - all these names are the same. My great grandfather used the MacDonell spelling all his life, but his wedding certificate uses McDonald. It just depended on custom, habit and sometimes whether the person doing the writing heard you correctly! All of us (I'm a Glengarry MacDonell) are members of Clan Donald, but it is normally considered to be split into 5 major groups; MacDonalds of the Isles, of Sleat and of Clanranald and MacDonells of Glengarry and Keppoch. The larger part of the MacDonells of Glengarry were evicted from their traditional homes in the Highland Clearances. The majority of the clan were Roman Catholic and of these many emigrated to Canada. Others went to New Zealand. Some stayed in Scotland. My great great great grandfather was one of these and became a shepherd (if you can't beat then, join them!) as did his son and his sons and their sons, both in Scotland and in Ireland. Happy hunting |

http://www.electricscotland.com/webc...og/grant2.html By the way to the regulars on the board, I'd suspected that some of the information on Electric Scotland before was incomplete, and i just noticed they omitted Urquhart from their list of Scottish names... now isn't that silly? |
