The Duff Diaspora

I've just found this site and am gobsmacked at Marhar's knowledge of the Duff name. I'm hoping he will come back with some further information that may help me trace the DUFF name in Ireland.

I've traced my Duff lineage only as far as my great-grandfather, Patrick Duff, who was born circa 1815 and is known to have died in 1886. He lived in County Limerick and possibly in Limerick itself. My father told me that the Irish Duffs originated in Scotland and that they emigrated from Scotland during some "troubles" in the 17th or 18th centuries. My own initial researches seem to indicate some Duffs settled in the northern and eastern areas of Ireland. I've searched a few sources to determine when the Duffs may have travelled down to County Limerick and County Clare, but there is no mention of any Duff families in these areas at all.

I'm open to any suggestions on the connection between the Duffs of Banffshire and my Irish Duffs.

Duff and Doff

Hi there,

I'm completely new to this forum. For a while I'm wrestling with a question about my name. My surname is Doff and I'm from Holland.I'm wondering if there's anyone who knows something about Duff's who went to Holland in the 16th century as soldiers of the Scottish Brigade. I know about a few Duff's / Doff's who went there for example: Daniel Duf, Jan Duff (soldier under col. Buccleugh, married Lijsbet Crijnen, Joris Duff (writer of this company), Olyvier Doff who married Anneken Bartels in Arnhem, Jan Doff (also my name, who married Jenne Hinderson), Thomas Dof (soldier under capt. Rijswijck and married Trijntje Hermans). The last member of my familietree i know of is Connelis Freriks Doff (1665) who married Fenne Jacobs.
Does anyone know something about a Dutch familyline (if there is one). I hope to hear from someone. I'm quite sure that there is a connection between Duff and Doff but I haven't find the scientific proof yet. WHo helps?

Kennoway

Marhar, isn't there some dispute as to the location of the castle where MacDuff's family was slain by MacBeth? I thought I read somewhere that near Culross are ruins that may be the site. Cupar was mentioned also. Where is Kennachy/Kennoway?
I can't seem to find it.

Regards,

mich
