My maiden name is Laws, heard my family may come from Aberdeen, then migrating to Wilkes Co. North Carolina USA in the 1600's. My mother's maiden name is Neel, heard that may be of Scottish descent. Any info would be great.

The Law's are a sept of the Maclaren Clan, and here is a bit of info about them.

MacLAREN

Motto: Creag an Tuirc (The boar's rock)

Origin of name: Gaelic, MacLabhruinn (Son of Laurence)

Known in Gaelic as 'Clann mhic Labhrainn', the clan MacLaren is difficult to pin down historically. Details are sketchy as to its origins, however there is one traditional account which claims descent from Lorn, son of Erc, who arrived in Argyll in 503 AD. There is no firm evidence to support this claim however.

A more plausible theory suggests the clan descended from a branch of the Celtic dynasty, adopting the name of Laurence of Achtow, a thirteenth century abbot. This claim is evidenced by the clan's rallying cry, 'Creag an Tuirc', meaning 'Boar's Rock'; this particular rock stands near Achtow in Balquhidder.

A fierce, warlike clan, the MacLarens were involved in continual feuding with their neighbours. However, they built a firm alliance with the influential Stewart clan in the fifteenth century, when a daughter of the MacLarens married a Stewart Lord of Lorne. Dougal, their first son, was the forebear of the famous Stewarts of Appin.

Many MacLaren clansmen emigrated to France and Italy to serve with the military in the fifteenth century. The MacLarens were recognised as a 'broken clan' by the mid sixteenth century.

your other name NEEL has origins in England.

There are at least 200 Law's in the Aberdeenshire Phone book
I know this is not much help to you but they are still there.

Unhappy Crockett

Hi Marhar

Have you heard of the Crockett's.

Also there was a town by the same name, in Scotland, you would'nt have any idea were it was? As it does not exist now not on any map I have seen.. even if you just know of an area for me to narrow down the search a bit.

Thank's for your help with this

Question The Boar's Rock Significance

I see there has been mention of The Boar's Rock with regard to Clan McLaren. Does anyone know of its significance to that particular clan? I posted the question to the History folks too. If I get a response there, I'll post it here.

Question Neel... oh so close to Kneeland, perhaps?

yes, it's me again! You know, with all the varying dialectal phonetic spellings and dropped and added syllables, I couldn't help but wonder if Neel is any relation to our Kneeland. Much research has been done on that branch, given its relation to 'the' William Wallace and earlier participation in Bannockburn (ref. Henry the Minstrel). Just musing...
