Just for information, House of Names is what we call a bucket-shop. The information on their site is designed to SELL stuff - not to give information. You would be much better trying the sites I gave further up this thread.

Best of luck with your research!

Pentlands of Midlothian

Hi folks,
My name may not be Pentland but my great great granny's was. From there I can take the line back with as near to proof as is possible to around sixteen hundred. Any Pentland relatives out there are welcome to any of my research. A couple of points: the Pentlands are NOT a clan and therefore have no chief. They are probably not related to three brothers who moved South from the Highlands before recorded history. They may be related to the St Clairs. They were farmers and coal miners through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries when the former were principally land-slaves and the latter slaves - literally - of the coal owners. Now if that doesn't get the discussion going then this forum's a waste of time.

I'd be interested in a response from "ThePentland" who said he was Chief of the Pentland "Clan". Your explanation makes more sense. There have been a number of Clans invented in the last hundred years or so - many of which have no historical basis. Many people on this side (North America) of the Atlantic assume that if their ancestors came from Scotland they must be part of a Clan.
