What is the Pentland Tartan, etc...
I am from Clan Pentland but I'm new at this researching the family history stuff... I didn't know that my Grandmother's family name was actually Pentland until recently. The family had changed their name to Pendleton because no one could pronounce Pentland where they lived in the States...annoying!
Did the Clan Pentland get their name because the people lived on Pentland Hill or near Pentland Firth or was it the other way around? What is the name of Clan Pentland's Tartan? So many questions...I am eager for any information I can get! thanks FaithP |

There seems to be very little on the internet about the name Pentland.
I found the following on a Sinclair family website (Sinclair seems to claim Pentland as one of their titles) "Pentland - Capt. John Sinclair of Lyth M.P. (1860-1925), Secretary of State for Scotland 1905-1912 and Governor of Madras India 1912-1919, was created 1st Baron Pentland of Lyth (in Caithness) in 1909. He was the youngest of the three sons of Sir John Sinclair of Barrock, 6th baronet of Dunbeath, and descended from George Sinclair of Mey who died in 1616. His son Henry succeeded as 2nd Lord Pentland in 1925; Henry's daughter is married and lives in New York. As he had no male heir, the title was extinguished when the 2nd Baron died in 1984." I'm curious as to why anyone would find Pendleton an easier name to pronounce than Pentland. That seems a little strange ![]() Two Scottish-based sites which may have information you seek are http://www.rampantscotland.com http://www.electricscotland.com In the case of ES, please ensure that you corroborate any information from that site with other sources, as they freely admit they do not check information, but merely post information as provided by interested parties - therefore the information cannot be taken as 'gospel'. |

Pentland name change...
I know, I thought it was a silly thing to do too...Pentland is so much prettier than Pendleton!
I know that I'm related to a Samuel (Sam) Pentland (later Pendleton) (born 1834) who was married to a Mary Hazlett (born 1835) and moved from Scotland to Belfast Ireland and then to Cherokee, Iowa... That's all I know. I'm also trying to do it so far without having to pay alot of money...hee, hee. That's why I haven't used those sites yet to find out my Tartan. FaithP |

The two sites above are FREE. Tartans are shown on each of the individual Clan sites - however, if Pentland is not considered a separate clan (by the Lord lyon Court) - then it may be that they have it listed as a sept. You'd have to check to find out which of the above may be true.
I have put some information on the Genealogy thread you started in the Gen Forum on here. I just think that Pendleton is a longer and more complex name than Pentland - and cannot fathom WHY Americans would find the former easier to pronounce than the latter. It just doesn't make any sense. ![]() |
