I have heard it said that some of the 'battles' were more akin to todays gang fights between young bloods , rather that pitched battles with the clan captains etc taking part .
How to distinguish between the one and the other is the tricky thing

Yes many of these clan battles were small skirmishes. The clans wouldn't have survived if they were large full scale battles.

And yes sadly, in modern day London we have people going round on a daily basis stabbing and shooting each other. It happens more frequently than the old Scottish clan battles did in medi-eval times.
