Three clans?

Hello everyone,

My Name is Morgan Pomaikai'i Walker Donnan Lawson. I was born and raised in Hawaii, as was my father. Three out of four of my grandparents came from Scotland to Hawaii around 1912 (they were from Aberdeen and Iverness). I remember them calling my a wee laddy, and staying up late singing scottish songs. They all had a heavy Scottish brogue and had reputations of being crazy characters. Anyway, like the other thousands of posts you must get from Americans of Scottish decent, I too have a couple questions about clans. Fortunately, I have done a bit of my own research before i decided to bother you good people.

Is it true that the surname Lawson comes from Maclaren? Is there anyone here who Knows of Lawsons from Aberdeen? My great grandparents were named William G.Lawson (yes i have seen the scotch commercials) and Mary Walker.

If Lawsom comes from MacLaren then that is easy enough to research myself. And the Walker clan has pleanty of info online as well. It is the name Donnan that i know the least about.

I have read About St. Donan, and the Donan castle. But i have yet to find any clan associated with this surname. Is there a realation to Dunn or Doonan?

Thank you for reading, and for any help you may offer.
M. Lawson

First of all, welcome to the forum Morgan. I hope you find at least some of the answers you are looking for, but even if you don't I am sure you will learn a bit more about your roots.

With regard to the Lawson name, I only really know of it from its association with whisky and meat products tho I don't know if the latter was originally from the Aberdeen(shire) area!

As for Donnan, there could be a connection to Doonan; the spelling of many names has changed over the years for a variety of reasons: sometimes it was a transcription error; other times the family might have changed their own name for their own reasons (maybe to disassociate themselves from other family members).

With regards to clans tho, not ALL names from Scotland are connected to one and even if they are the actual connection can be tenuous to say the least. So don't be disappointed if you don't find a clan... you could always start your own as many have over the years!
