A cursory Google search seems to suggest that the name is both Scots and Irish - although I always thought it was an Irish name!

Family McIlroy
The family name McIlroy belongs to Clan MacGillivray, one of the oldest branches of the Clan Chattan Confederation. Originally from Argyll and Mull, the clan settled about 1500 at Dunmaglas in Strathnairn (Nairn is on the North Sea coast). The MacGillivrays took a prominent part in the Jacobite Risings of 1715 and 1745. The handsome tartan is dominated by red. The clan motto is: Touch not the cat without a glove. [from Robert Bain's The Clans and Tartans of Scotland]
