McCroskey-MacCroskie

Looking for any information on this family in Scotland...most likely is the District of Galloway (Wigtown area). My 7x gr. grandfather was John McCroskey b.1680 Wigtown but relocated to Antrim, Ireland in the early 1700's with his wife Elizabeth Gay. From there they moved to Rockbridge, Virginia with their many children.

Not sure if they were part of a clan or not.

Thank you for any information given.

Hello
A cursory google search also mentions the name in Kirkcubrightshire. It might be worth having a search in that county?

I have to confess, it must be a very rare name - for instance, I've never heard of it in Scotland!

I will look into, thank you.

Yes I have noticed that it is a rare name. The McCroskey's of America all can be linked back to John & Elizabeth McCroskey, but before they went to Antrim from Wigtown(John) and Ayr(Elizabeth) it is a hard to do....

It's a name I've never heard - doesn't mean it's not still around in Scotland - just not in my home area and within my acquaintances.

Shelle, you have done extremely well to trace one of the branches of your family tree back to the late 1600s; while I am not going to say it will be impossible to go back further, it will certainly prove to be more difficult given that much of the info you are looking for from that time wasn't recorded or could have been lost! That's not to say that will be the case for you, so good luck in your continued quest!

Yeah I figured that it would get harder especially since most written names were spelled by how they sounded and with the different variants, it can be near impossible to trace from here.....but I won't give up, you never know what can be found
It's been a long road to get here...

I did get a reply from someone in Wigtown about my family. A census was taken in 1684 but of only those 13 yrs & older...so it is possible this was my family but no direct link as of yet to John (he would have been 4 yrs at the time).
