my clan or sept?

I have traced the Chapman name back to 1859 in Nova Scotia. My relatives over the years claimed that they came over on the Hector 1773 although I have found no record of that. Assuming that we are Scottish, what clan would the Chapmans be under....anyone any ideas please?

As far as I know (I have friends with that surname) it is an English name, meaning a business man.

Very old Scottish name, Lothians & Perthshire, means a peddlar, first recorded 1296, a Ralph Chapman, murdered, Dundee, William Chapman was Provost of Aberdeen 1327, Thomas Chapman, merchant, had his ship sunk by the English, 1359, also Roxburgh, Stirling, Lanark etc' all over the place but not a clan.
From Black's Surnames! wullie.

The Chapmans

Many thanks for the comments. I have traced them back to 1859 in Pictou Nova Scotia. The bit about the Hector was always tossed about in our family but no proof of same. There is no surviving manifest of the voyage in1773 only a list put forward at a much layer date by some of the passengers by memory. So they may or may not have been on that ship but its seems having settled in the pictou area that they were Scottish. Many thanks

Buz , what other family names are there ? .
Find out who 'Chapman's ' mother was . Who did he himself marry ?

Re. a tartan for you to wear ,
I came across this on another site ,

Quote:
In Scotland the Chapmans seemed to be in the Angus District in old census records.

As far as a tartan goes - according to the Scottish Tartans Authority there have been some personal tartans registered to people with the name Chapman. But for the most part they were not affiliated with any Clan and wear the Angus District Tartan.
the Scottish Tartans Authority site ( a private organisation ) may have more for you on that ,
or the official govt one , The Scottish Register of Tartans , could put you on the right track .
