Grant-Cherokee Connection.

Guys, a special delegation from the Cherokee Nation attended the Abernethy Highland Games on August 14th. The games chieftain this year was Principal Chief Chad "Corntassel" Smith who was given the honour to commemorate the Grant-Cherokee connection. Apparently up to 25% of Cherokee's are descended from a Ludovick Grant of Creichie, Aberdeenshire, who was captured at Preston in the Jacobite Rising of 1715. He was transported as an indentured servant to Charlestown, South Carolina, and on completion of his sentence became an Indian trader taking a Cherokee wife. Obviously a busy man this Ludo' his descendants are here to see where their ancestor came from. wullie m

Gidday Wullie ,
dunno how I missed this thread the other week .
Yep , The Siol Lewis - the Cherokee descendants of Ludovick Grant, younger of Crichie , none of whom bear the surname Grant) were recognised officially ( as a 'sept" as it were ) at the International Gathering last month .
Just goes to show eh cousin , that the Scottish clan system is alive and well in the world

Have you ever gone to the Abernethy Games Wullie ?

When Scots landed in NC where the majority of the Cherokees live, marriage was promoted. They saw many similarities between the ancient Cherokee and Celtic culture. Those unions created what is referred to in the mountains as Blessed Blends.

Morning to ya wullie!
