To Para Handy! Isobel Stewart, widow, her son Paul Macpherson and his brothers named, his sisters and their spouses for their interest, with the remnant kin and friends of former Donald Macpherson of Dalraddy in Badenoch. "The culprits are", Alexander son of Ranald, son of Black John in Livington, Glencoe, Donald son of Ranald his brother, Archibald son of Angus son of Black John in Dewriss, Alexander son of Angus son of Black John his brother, Black John son of Duncan son of John Eyre? in Glencoe, Duncan son of Duncan son of Finlay son of Rankine the younger, all indwellers etc' sound like a thoroughly bad lot! The Macphersons had a long standing rumble with Keppoch & Glencoe. Can't find these Glencoe placenames, try this, Where's the path ? the map is on the same page as the aerial pic' type Glencoe top left, use the map, the pic' follows. Keep clicking on the map to enlarge the scale. wullie m
Is this a complaint to the Parliament?

Auld Chiel and Wullie m
Thanks for your translations which are not identical. At any rate, you both confirm that a version of the name now known as Rankin was included amongst the names of Glencoe men in 1639.
It would seem to follow, unless some knowledgeable person disagrees, that the Rankins really were a sept of the MacDonalds of Glencoe.

Auld Chiel
Thanks for the link explaining the Gaelic naming system.

Wullie m
Thanks for the map. Perhaps I am not using it properly. Can you see the place names Livington and Dewriss in the vicinity of Glencoe? I have never heard of these places.

Para Handy, I think Dewriss might be Dalness, no clue of the other!
