american trying to figure out the clans/tartans etc...please help

Hi I'm Katie. I am trying to figure out what clan my father's family is in. My grandmother's maiden name was Glass and my father says that we are Cannons and Macclouds. I have only been able to find Irish Cannons, but he says we are Scottish and that he researched it while over there on an extended vacation a few years ago. I really want to get him something in our clan tartan for Christmas, but obviously I want it to be the correct one. I looked on the House of Tartans website, but there was no tartan for Cannon. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just a cursory google search would seem to suggest that the Cannon surname is Irish, Welsh and English - but that doesn't mean someone of that name didn't settle in Scotland at some point in history.

The other name is MacLeod - and that name will certainly throw up lots and lots of information, including tartans, chief and other facts!

The reality is: you would have to trace your family back to the Scots immigrant to your country. And even then, after tracing him/her back to Scotland - that ancestor may not have been a member of a clan and therefore have no tartan anyway! Lots of Scots were not part of the clan system and have no problem in describing themselves as Scots. There are what are termed district tartans - so even if there isn't a family tartan, if you traced your ancestry back to a certain area, there may well be a tartan associated with the place. Finally, we don't have Tartan Police here - if you like a tartan, wear it!

Edited to add: Isn't House of Tartans a bucket-shop?

Hello, Katieb, and welcome.

As Polwarth says, and as you have already found, it's never simple, is it?

Cannon would be difficult, if not impossible. Why not a Macleod tartan? However, surely not the one on the right hand side in the following link, lest you shock your father on christmas day morning into a heart attack.

Clan MacLeod Society of Scotland: Tartans

I do see the trouble in working out what to give your father for a present. You want to give him a special present, but I would bet he says he wants nothing. Always a bit bothersome, that. Oh yes, indeed.

I do hope you find something that you want. And Polwarth knows much more about this than I, so always trust Polwarth. That's my advice.

I'm sure you will find a tartan and your dad will love it.

Haha, Polwarth! That is one I have not noticed for several years. I KNEW there was some place that said "ooh, go on. Design your very own tartan whatever way you like, no matter what mad colours and we will make it for you". I recall posting its address as a merry joke in the chatroom long dead. Heh!
