Which tartan can I wear

I am English but my grandfather was scottish. Please can somebody advise which tartan I can wear. His surname was Kirkwood but I dont know which part of Scotland he came from.

Kirkwood would appear to be a lowland name - from the Borders and ayrshire.
Don't know if it has been claimed as a sept by any clan - it is usually considered a 'location' name.

You can wear any tartan you like... if you like it then wear it; there is no such thing as the tartan police so don't let anyone tell you different!

Some scottish names did not have their own clan but were septs of larger clans.
Kirkwood were a sept of the MaCGregor clan.

Where any tartan you like, most scots I know choose tartan by what colour and sett they like.

Assigning tartans to clans and border families is a load of rubbish. Choose anyone you want
