Rubbish, septs are a complete fabricated fantasy spun by tartan weavers taking advantage of the scottish highlands revivalism. I seriously doubt a lowland border family had very little to do with the macgregors, a highland clan hundreds of miles away.

septs are a complete myth

Where do you get the idea that Kirkwood is a "lowland border family" ?

As to this
"I seriously doubt a lowland border family had very little to do with the macgregors, a highland clan hundreds of miles away." ,
do you claim greater knowledge of things pertaining to the Clan MacGregor than do the Clan MacGregor themselves ?

Clans are not a strictly Highland institution. One of the earliest mention of Scottish clans was a decree issued to the "chiefis and chieftainis of the clans duelling in the hielands and the bourderis" so this goes to show that Border clans were every bit as much of a concern to royalty as the Highland clans were.
