Sasskat,
There is a lot of material on this clan. Probably more than most clans. Did you check out the post "Genalogy websites"? Just scroll down and you will find it. You may find a wealth of info there. Nevertheless, the Sutherlands are of Norse decent and if you have the time and $$$, Steve McDonald (A Sutherland himself) has two excellent CDs you can purchase. It is the most amazing Celtic music you will ever hear--very historical in content. Here is some info to get you started: Sutherland The founder of the line of Sutherland, was Hugh, son or grandson of Freskin de Moravia, who, probably by marriage, obtained the clan territory about the time of William the Lion. Hugh's son, William, was created Earl of Sutherland about 1237, and died 1248. William, 2nd Ear, won a great victory over the Danes at Ree-cross. William, 3rd Earl, fought a Bannockburn, and his brother Kenneth, 4th Earl, fell at Halidon Hill. Robert, 6th Earl, fought at Otterburn. Nicholas, 7th Earl, had a feud with the Mackays, which was carried on by his son, Robert. John, 12th Earl, fought at Corrichie in 1562. William, 16th Earl, left a daughter Elizabeth (his only child), whose right to the earldom was established in 1771. She married George Granville, Marquis of Stafford, and was ancestress of the Dukes of Sutherland. Dunrobin Castle is the seat of the Morair Chat, Chief of the clan, Duke and Earl of Sutherland. |

You know, I found this web site last night and was very happy to have found it. However I started looking around to find more information on the Sutherlands, and from a lot of sources I get that they loved to fights, are to take up arms in defense of people who rarely if ever returned the favor. Many Sutherlands died fighting for causes, so it's it weird that even to this day they are still doing the same thing. A lot of Sutherlands, in NC, USA have been in the military. I do know this and there are a lot of Sutherlands there, even though some beomce Gibsons and some are now Morrisons, which actually where Muarice and Mcleods. I didn't get that from any book but the family bible by the way. I love history so I think Celto might just beomce my mentor so to say !! LOL

Sasskat,
I have told all of the older members (we all have wrinkles)about this great book. You have to drop everything that you are doing now and go out to the bookstore and buy it. It is called, "The Scotch Irish: A Social History," by James Leyburn. Anyway, his position is that all of the Scots were fighters. If they were not fighting (in the USA) with the Germans, or the Indians, they were fighting with themselves. For my Clan, history is pretty open with the fact that President Lincoln had to play the peacemaker for the family Clan he married into. I guess it is just that Scotish blood, LOL! Just a quick note, there are, many others on Scotland.com who are history buffs--more so than I. |

Celto
Well since I haven't had the oppurtunity to hear from many people yet, I'm taking you for the history wizard! As for Scots fighting, well yeah, I can understand that, it's in the blood!! LOL Especially since Sutherlands are from Norse decent, oh wait, does this mean that I'm even more prone to temper problems, and I just thought it was the red in my hair!! LOL I've been looking through www.usgenweb.org for the name and I have come up with tons of relatives that I know of but I'm lucky in knowing mostly where my family settled when they came to the USA, good ole North Carolina hehee! I'm still digging. |
