J. McNIel yes ther has been quite a lot of research done almost four and half years, and according to what I have been told that not only were sirnames but also given names on the documents.
There was a site that listed sirnames from A to Z, all you had to do is click on the letter that started your
name and it would give you the date it was first recorded and the Gaelic spelling, whether this site
was reliable or not I do not know, this site no longe appears anywhere now.As I had my computer
and hard drive stolen so I lost some of my research, but had saved most of it on disk.

Its a sad fact, but there is a LOT of information spread over a number of websites that are NOT reliable, hence the reason someone (Nonny?) said you should carefully check everything you are told or even find out for yourself. To be honest, unless you see something beyond a few words on a screen my suggestion is to take it with a generous pinch of salt!

Larry D, I think you should follow the above advice when being given details from your "source of information"... especially as he appears reluctant to tell you where "he physicaly researched records"! At the end of the day it doesn't matter how many years of research have been done, if the info that is being found is wrong (or even made up as it can sometimes be!) then all you are doing is wasting your time!

The MUSTER ROLL list all the names of those who fought at Culloden on the Jacobite side.

Hmm. My family members have been searching for 6-7 years me 3-5 years all for the same people, and still a brick wall that is taking forever to be taken down!

I'm hoping I can get past my brick wall soon... perhaps this summer.... but I don't count on it.

Perhaps you should talk the answer out of him. Sometimes I find people like to attach their families to some important event in history.

ScotSites-Polwarthand J.McNiel yes you are absolutely right this is why I am trying to confirm
everything I read or told as I always take information with a grain of salt untill I have confirmed
it as fact, hoever as for our family at Culloden this was handed down from my Granfather
and told to us by my uncle who passed away at 92 years which if alive today would make him
close to 110 years, but the research is still on going and have learned that they may have come
from around Peebleshire or Moray still looking into this.

Thank You.

Thats quite a distance, Peeblesshire and Moray.

Hopefully you and your relatives can sort out what hasn't been confirmed.

My family from what I've seen maybe from the Firth of Clyde region or on the other side of Scotland's "waist" (the narrow middle part) the Firth of Forth. Although with what we've found were most likely from the Firth of Clyde area.

If your family and Culloden has been a tradition passed down would it be Oral tradition?

Why can't Americans from the States be happy to be American? Why can't we be glad to know we are what we are regardless of where our ancestors came from? Scottish 'blood' is no different than any other kind of human blood, it doesn't establish WHO YOU ARE!

Is it escapism?

Larry, don't feel like I'm picking on you, it's just a question I've been pondering a long time now. (And we DO get a lot of those who want to be and decide to be and claim they are, really, it gets old!) I wish you success with your search and hope you are able to learn a great deal about your family's history.
