Wildes Family Name
I am trying to find out if the name wildes is of Scottish origin and if it is related to any clan. We have been told all our lives that our forefather came from Scotland . Once many years ago I came across a book that had the Wildes name and Tartan in it but now I can not locate the information, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Mary Boone |

Hello Dolphingirl,
I have this: Waud. Variant of weald or wold [Walter de la Waud, patent rolls 1202]. Hence also Weld and Weale the final -d. The latter being lost as in Wiles[Stephen de la Wile; patent rolls 1202] from realted Wild. This form: "Surnames"; Ernest Weekley: John Murray London, 1917. The name is of Norman origin comming to England. It is entirely possible that you ancester moved to Scotland; the Lowlands I would say, and perhaps married a Scots women. (There is nothing on the name in any of my Scottish, nor Irish reference sources). This marriage would be your association, although your ancsestor nor his wife, in those Lowland times, would have thought anything about that. I would say that your family story is probably correct. The state of settlement and the time period would help you as well: before 1800, Pennsylvania on down to Georgia. After 1800, could be about anywhere; New York for example. Many Scots went to Australia. Regards J |
