Wallace clan info?

Does anyone know what the correct Wallace clan symbol is? I've seen different variations of it on the internet. My husband thinks he's related to William Wallace which I don't think is possible, would need to try to find how far back his geneology records go... but he is a Wallace nonetheless. Anyhow, I'm just trying to find out if there is just one clan symbol (the Pro Libertate one) or variations of that one and which ones are correct.

Hello
If you do a search on this forum (Clans) - from the blue bar at the top of the page, with the word 'Wallace' - there are loads of threads on the topic.

The only way to check your husband's ancestry (and you are right to be sceptical about the William Wallace relationship!) is to start at his generation, then his father's and so on, back to the original immigrant to your country. Then perhaps via ship's records, immigration records, you could find out excactly where (or even IF!) his family originated in Scotland and then old parish registers, or the GRO registers might help you find out more info.

A good Scottish based site is Rampant Scotland Directory I used to recommend ElectricScotland.com, but it is no longer based in Scotland.

Thanks for all the info

For some reason I had better luck retracing my genealogy, even going back to the 1200s. Campbell clan going back to Sir Gillespic Campbell. And that the first person on that side to come to the states was Patrick Campbell.

Furthest I could get to my husband's background was a George Wallace that was born in 1853 in the states. I had been searching census records and ran out of luck after that.

If there are still generations in the US that you have been unable to track back, then you might well be on a hiding to nothing with your husband's antecedents.

We did manage to make some headway after DH got a chance to talk to his father. Problem I'm finding is there are sooo many Wallaces in the U.S. and George is pretty common name. I had better luck on my side just cause I remembered my Grandma telling me about an ancestor of mine named Ludolph. I'm glad his last name isn't Smith, it'd almost be impossible to track back then.

There may be many Wallaces, but if you keep going back, generation by generation, surely the US Census can take you back quite a way?

The LDS keep a HUGE database - but cannot be totally relied upon as the info is posted AS IS by family members, who are often mistaken about their genealogy - but it's worth a shot!

He's not descended from Sir William Wallace, trust me. Many years after Wallace's death, Blind Harry mentioned a daughter, but no sons. The alleged daughter married so the Wallace name would have gone by the time she had children - if she even existed... There is no documentary evidence of any direct descendant of Sir William Wallace.

I'm a member of the Society of William Wallace (google it). We've done the research, as have several other historians of repute. Don't waste time on this, go look for the real ancestors!
