Hi there,
My maiden name is McGinley. I was wondering if anyone has heard of this name anywhere throughout Scotland? I am having some troubles distinguishing if the name used to be McKinley? or MacGinley/Mackinley. If anyone knows anything I would greatly appreciate any response! |

Hello!
According to the site below, McGinley is an Irish name from Donegal. This is not to say it is not found in Scotland. Many Irish names are common to both countries, due to immigration. Have a look at this site and see if it is any help. http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlkik/ihm/cntynam2.htm |

My name is 'McGinley' and I've been told that the name can be found on both Ireland' & Scotland' so I Pride myself as being what they call over here "Scotch/Irish". But my sources came from one of those "Coat of Arms, Family SurName" Research buisnesses who I don't have much Faith in. I've gone through a few of them & each one has given me a different Story with a Different Family Crest. Does anyone out there know where I can get a "Honest" History of my Family Name? I've spent plenty of money on the Internet & Stores but these people are more into selling you Something with no Real Subject. I've heard that they Actually will make up or give you a 'Crest thats not even yours. Beware of a Chain Store named "Whats in a Name" I spent $95.00 on a crest that turned out to be for the name "McGinn".....They Have No Shame ! I was born in the States But you should never Forget your Original Family Routes, I Pride Myself on the fact that "My People/Bloodline" are from 'Overthere'. I would appreciate if anyone has advise or can point me in the Right Direction. Take Care & have A Great New Year & Holiday."Cheers" |

According to another Irish site the name is definitely of Irish origins http://www.hoganstand.com/general/identity/lists/g.htm BUT, as I said, many names appear in both countries. The term 'Scots/Irish' (we prefer not to use the word Scotch - that is nowadays only used to describe food - such as Scotch Eggs, Scotch beef etc!) is usually an American term for Scots people who left Scotland and lived in Ireland (often for two or three generations) probably from the time of the Plantation - and who then eventually left Ireland for the New World. According to both sites, the name is from Donegal. I suggest you do a Google search with the name and Donegal - and see what turns up! Good luck with your research. ![]() You are well to be wary of those bucket shops They do not thoroughly research anything. In Scottish heraldry, arms are only granted to one man, say a Mr MacGinley.... HE may share the same name as you - but you have no right to bear his arms. His children can use his arms - suitably differenced - but unless you are a lineal descendant, you are not entitled to use the arms of Mr MacGinley that were granted to one family called MacGinley! In Scotland, the Lord Lyon Court grants Arms (even today!). For instance, if your name was Campbell and you wanted to display a coat of arms - you would be allowed to use the Clan Chief's arms, surrounded by a leather belt and buckle (to denote that you know it is not your arms you display, but those of your Clan Chief). I hope this makes it a little clearer for you - it is very murky waters! |

You sound Like a Definite Professional in the 'Geneology Field' (I hope I spelled that Right..lol) I will definitly do that 'Google Search'. I would very much like your opinion on where I should look to find my Correct 'Family or Clan' Crest/Shield. Do you recommend any records of books where this info might be? It seems like there was no real interest in finding that stuff out (Sad to say) in my Family. I now that I am Majority 'Irish' Decent With some 'German' from a GreatGrand-Mother. I eventually want to do a Family search up to my GreatGrand-Parents. you seem to have a Great Intrest in this Field & any Info or Opinions would be GREATLY appreciated. sorry about the mis-use of the term Scots, I was hopeing there was some 'Old HighLand Warrior Blood' in me..lol ThankYou again for your time & intrest. Take Care' 'The Lost American' |

Hello again!
Sorry, but I am Scottish, not Irish, and so I have very little information about Ireland that I can share with you. Can I suggest that you do a Google search - perhaps under Irish genealogy MacGinley - and see what that brings up. It may take you some while to find correct information. The advice I always give people whose families originate in Scotland is to start with their own generation in the country to which the family emigrated. Go back, generation by generation and then - when you find the original immigrant to your country - you should be able to trace that ancestor back via, for instance, a passenger list, to a certain port of exit in Ireland or Scotland. That may then lead on to where they came from in Ireland or Scotland. There is absolutely no other way to 'prove' for certain how your family arrived somewhere, and from where they originated ![]() Good luck! |
