Greetings, normally the clan of your father is the one relevant for you. It runs the father line always.

That i know but my dad died when i was 3 and all he wrote in the letter was that i should look up these clans. He never said which were his and which were not. So hence the many clan names.

It should be absolutely easy to find out which name was 'his' clan. His surname would have to be a Clan name or one of its septs.

Big problem there Well a few. 1) i don't know his last name 2) my name has changed too much 3) my "mom" *shudders* never talked about him 4) my last name changed just as much as my first 5) according to my "mom" *shudders* his last name was changed and 6) i don't know where he's burried and the only way here you can find that out is with a last name

You can see my many problems here

You certainly do face a challenge!

My grandmother was an Irwin - which is a different spelling of Irvine. You can learn some more about that family here:
http://www.clanirwin.org/aboutus.php

For the MacMillan Clan - Somerled MacMillan's book "Bygone Lochaber" is an excellent resource. It has been out of print for some time - but I believe there is a bookstore in Aberdeen that still has copies (I can't remember the name of the bookstore - sorry!). I picked up a copy at the West Highland museum in Fort William.

There are lots of on-line resources for the MacDonalds. It is a very large Clan with many branches, so for specific information, you would need to know which branch your family came from.

Buaidh gun robh leat!

*laughs* wow yeah i heard of the book but my brother cannot find it. And yeah finding which branch of the MacDonalds i came from will be slightly hard seeing as the only family member (besides my brother) that i talked to was my dad and... well... yeah he's no longer around. But thanks for the site and the title of the book i'll make sure to look for it.
