This is a rethorical(im not moving) question and you might find it a dumb one, I am asking this out of ignorance and wanting to know the answer so please try and no laugh to hard at it nor make to much fun out of it. (Atleast answer first.. then you may have as much fun as you like hehe)

If I(or anyone else for that matter) moved to scotland. Would i be able to "join" a clan in any way. Im not sure if its all blood related or if it is group related (same city, same believes etc).

Would anyone be interested in explaining this and why i may or may not be able to join/create a clan if i did move.

Thank you all for replys and i am very sorry if this is not the place for questions other than clan searches.

Thumbs up

Hello

I'm just saying that I think you can't join a clan. A clan is pretty much Family. I don't know though if you can make one. I only know about some things from my Father. Anyways, I hope I helped a little...

In truth, the Scottish clan system as it used to be,is dead.... there are still clan chiefs (for some clans only) and many people, mostly from foreign countries, become members of Clan SOCIETIES. Many (although not all) of them are based in the USA. These are societies set up as social clubs for those who either share the same surname(s) or have names which have been claimed as sept to the main clan surname. For instance, Clan Stewart of Appin claims as sept the name Livingstone. Some insist that you have a link to the main clan name no further distant than say a grandparent, others just want you to show an interest in their clan. The truth is that on payment of a sum of money, anyone can join a clan society!! Normally, those of us who are Scots are members (or not - not all Scots names were ever clans!) of a clan by blood.

Sooooo, the short answer would appear to be - 'you pays your money and takes your choice'!

If you are truly interested in Scottish history and culture, do a lot of reading and you will get the picture. Try the Lord Lyon's site for an overview of clans, septs, highland dress etc!
