Hello,
I was just wondering id there are any Slater's and/or Findlays I can talk to. If you are a Slater or Findlay, then there's a good chance that we're related. Oh... and has anyone ever heard of James Slater Findlay? |

Hello! Sorry, I'm neither a Slater nor a Findlay! Slater is claimed as an English name (from Derbyshire), as well as Scots and Irish! You have to determine which one you are descended from.
Asking people to recognise a name can prove difficult without further details, such as dates or place of birth! If you post further information, then I am sure that someone on here might be able to assist you ![]() Good luck with your research! |

Slater is my grandfather's middle name, and it was his mothers last name. Maybe I did spell it wrong in some way, but I'm sure it's a clan. Either that, or the Findlays kinda took over... Anyways, I don't know much... I need to ask my Father... he was born in Scotland.(And so were everyone else in my family)

I did a bit more research last night on the two names you gave - and I'm afraid that I have been unable to find any information re a clan Slater - there is no Slater tartan listed on the main tartan authority's website, nor have I been able to find out whether they are perhaps not a clan in their own right, but a sept of a larger clan. Sorry, maybe someone else will be able to help you with the Slater name.
As I pointed out, not ALL Scottish names were ever members of a clan. Especially names that originated in the lowlands or the Borders area. My family is a highland Clan, but there are many Stewarts with origins in the central belt who were never members of a clan at all! That doesn't make them any less a Stewart or any less a Scot Slater is a name like Smith or Fletcher... ie a name that originated from whatever work a person did in times gone past... Slaters were roofers and floor-layers, just like Smiths were blacksmiths or silversmiths and Fletchers made arrows! It would appear from my fairly cursory search (sorry, but I have got a lot of things happening at work at the moment!) that the Findlays are not a clan either - but they are sept to the Farquharson clan (and maybe others, but I had no further time to look for you!) .... Have a look here at the Farquharson page on electricscotland. There are a couple of pages on the Farquharsons, including their sept list. http://www.electricscotland.com/webc.../farquha2.html Asking your Dad is probably the best way to go... but another good Scottish site (apart from Electricscotland) is http://www.rampantscotland.com Perhaps that site will have further information which may help you with your search! Good luck.

This whole thing is complicated... Now I need to question my father... this is going to be difficult... but, the Farquharson clan... my dad mentioned it once... I think he said that he's part of that clan... and a teacher last year.. his last name was Farquharson. I think you really helped me Polwarth. I think I'll do some research of my own too... Thanx for the sites too. Anyways, I think I know why the Slaters and Findlays arn't listed as clans...
