Question

I just wanted to know if there are any Munro's in the cummunity? I am a grand-daughter of a Munro. So I would like to chat with other Munro's.

Wink Clans!

Do you know whether or not clan members are actually named as belonging to a specific clan? For example, if I wanted to find out if my family is actually a "member" or "registered" to a specific clan....is there such a thing? Knowing only what my grandfather told me, it seems that we should actually be named, or enrolled as belonging to a clan...is this right? Please educate me.....thank you kindly.

The 'Clan System' has largely disappeared - brought about by various things, including the Jacobite Uprisings and the later Clearances - when many landowners and Clan Chiefs valued sheep and money against the old loyalties given by clansmen to them as their chief, and owed by them to their clansmen...

What most people refer to as 'Clans' nowadays are Clan Societies - often with the figurehead of the present day clan chiefs. These seem to be much more popular in the USA and Canada than anywhere else, including Scotland, I'm afraid!

So, I'm afraid the short answer is: no - there is no such list - but the Societies do keep a list of registered members - and some of the societies are much more specific about what makes you a 'member' - ie relationship to the name or a sept of the name, no further removed than a grandparent, for instance.

Clanship was normally a matter of birth or adoption into the 'family' - but nowadays, all it takes is a yearly subscription!

Some of the Clan societies raise sums of money to help keep the traditional clan chief's lands and castles in good repair...

Smile Munro

No I am not a Munro and I'm still learning about my family. I have packed my records away and don't even remember my grandfather's mother's maiden name, she too was born in Scotland. I think they lived in one of the outlying areas of Edinburgh.

I'm proud to be Scottish, although my family is also English. Of course that was very taboo when my grandparents married and caused quite a family rift. They were married for 60 years. Good luck on your search. If I learn of anything that may help you I will let you know.
