The Stewarts have a number of Clans, S of Appin, S of Bute for example.

My family originated in Appin and then, until my Dad's generation, lived in Invernesshire. I am an Appin because my Dad was one, so was his dad and so on.... Although I married into another clan sept, I still consider myself an Appin but my daughter is her father's sept!

My mother's family were from the far northwest of Scotland.

'Clan' affiliations are usually through the father, however, foreigners often have no direct patriarchal link to Scotland and choose to use their mother's link.
