Out of curiosity, why should he/she be taking her mother's clan tartan?

Usually, it is your father's tartan which you lay claim to,not your mother's...

Mind you, lots of Americans/Canadians seem to be so keen to find a Scottish connection that if their father has no connection, they use their mother's Scottish connection!

Tartan Mother or Father?

Now I am curious....do Clans follow a more matriarchial society or patriarchial? Who gets what tartan? Any clues?
