Seems like the the Stewarts originated from lots of
different areas. Fenwick seems to be one of the areas
where our relatives originated from. a female with the
surname of brown married a Stewart male. 8 generations
ago from today.
Other family maternal is Dunstan.
any one have any connection to either of these families
say hi. thankyou.

Hello
I'm a Stewart - but not from the lowlands! Fenwick is in Ayrshire (I think!).

Not all Stewarts were part of a clan - the name derives from the title of Lord High Steward of Scotland, and Steward is still a variant spelling of the name.

Stewarts NOT descended from Robert the Bruce ???

>> Do not Stewarts descend from Robert the Bruce?

> Not 'my' Stewarts.

This seem strange indeed having read accounts that all modern Stewarts ultimately descended from a union of the Robert the Bruce of fame and the daughter of William the Stewart (early 1300's). If this is untrue, could you provide references to the contrary (url's or other documents like books)?

The name 'Stewart' comes from the Lord High Steward of Scotland (that version of the name, ie with a final 'd' is still around)... BUT it is also a name from the occupation of House Steward.... You need to read a little more.

I am a Stewart of Appin - and can trace my family back to the early 1600s. That's enough for me - don't need to know more, thanks.

Not quite accurate. Walter Stewart married Bruce's daughter, Marjorie, and thus the line became 'royal' through their descent. Walter's grandfather Alexander James Stewart had two sons: James (Walter's father) and Sir John Stewart of Bonkyl. He had several sons, and so on down the line. So therefore not ALL modern descendants of the Stewarts are of this particular royal lineage.

Sorry, but that's genealogy for you. There's a wee reference here:
http://home.freeuk.net/andy.hanson/genealogy/f259.htm

you may find enlightening. Follow the lines back and to the sides. There were a lot of Stewarts about back then, and it is ridiculous to assume that all modern Stewarts are descended just from one small line.
