I have been trying to trace back my family history. There are so many variations with the McAllister name that it is so hard to find where my family came from.
If someone could help me I would appreciate it so much.
This is what I have:
My grandfather James McAllister (I know he was at least James II or he could be the 3rd or 4th or so on) He came to America from scotland when he was 13 which would be around 1926. The last I heard, he was a tugboat operator in Philidelphia. He had a sister named either Margret or Peggy McAllister. MY grandmother Ruth Mclaughlin says she remembers calling her Peggy. James had my father Raymond James McAllister.
This is all i have so far.

My family has been torn apart by divorces so it is very difficult to trace back any futher than this.

I would love to know where the name McAllister came from and if this was part of the McAllister clan that I have heard so much about.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you
Jason McAllister

Dear Jason,

Mcalliseter meaning 'the son of alice, a baptismal name (as opposed to an occupational or locational name). Common variants include Alison, Allison, and Alice. The origin of the name of this name arises from two sons of alexander MacAlister of Loupe, who, wiht some of their followers, escaped to the parish of avondale.

1926 wasn't that long ago genealogically speaking, so there is a good chance that you can find information on your family if you are willing to do the work yourself. There should be information on your grandfather in his immigration and citizenship papers that will probably tell you where exactly he was born and from there you can work with records overseas to connect back to family that may still be living in Scotland. The 1930 U.S. Census should be made available to the public shortly if it hasn't been released already, and you might be able to find him on that, though you really need to get ahold of his naturalization papers to get anywhere.

Smile Beacon primary book

I have two primary books, one a reading book and the other a math book that are signed "Ruth Ann McAllister" in cursive writing. The publication of the books is 1926. I am guessing that Ruth Ann McAllister was the teacher and put her name in the front of the books for return. I am not a McAllister by geneology, and there is no notation of city nor state where the books came from. I am not sure of the originational location of the books. If these belong to a member of your family, I would be happy to let you have them because they belong with family. I will somehow try to take a picture as an attachment for you to view the signiture.

Sincerely,
Staci Hernandez (Phillips)
