You're McNeill family could be descended from Scottish migrants to Northern Ireland. Perhaps the Galloglas or the Scots settling during the plantation time.
There is no difference in spelling really. There are members in my family who use MacNeill, or MacNeil while others use McNeill or even McNeil.
