ncneills and Macneils?

I am interesting in finding if I can affiliate with Clan Macneil. My grandparents emmigrated from county Tyrone northern Ireland in the mid to lats 1920s. Our family name is McNeill. I understand that this is a "sept" of clan Macneil. Does this mean that I can be affiliated with Clan Macneil, and also whether Macneil of Barra or of Colonsay? If I am a Macneil, do you have any information on how I could become a member of a Macneil clan association? I also have Scottish ancestry through my mother's family. They are "Gordons".

You're McNeill family could be descended from Scottish migrants to Northern Ireland. Perhaps the Galloglas or the Scots settling during the plantation time.

There is no difference in spelling really. There are members in my family who use MacNeill, or MacNeil while others use McNeill or even McNeil.
