I have to be honest and say it is not a name I have ever come across in Scotland.... Must be fairly rare, I would think.
If it is Netherby - then Netherby is an English placename... maybe they were a borders family on the English side of the border? As for Scots holding long grudges and feuds... Naaaah, not for a couple of hundred years, at least! ![]() If you ever get over this side of ocean, there would be a lot to explore re the Grahams - and maybe you could look into the Netherys as well. Good luck with your research. |

Thanks for your help! You could be right about the Netherby placename. I do know that my ancestors were known as border reivers, if that means anything....and I DO intend on crossing the ocean soon...
Nice chatting with ye and hope to hear from ye again! |

Yes, I know what border reivers were!
![]() The thing is, the borders was never really 'Clan' areas. The bigger families were known amongst other things as House of....(fill the name in!) BUT when trying to codify the whole Scottish thing, many House ofs... became 'clans'... For instance, I am a Stewart of Appin, and there are others like Stuarts of Bute. But there were plenty of Stewarts who came from what is now the central belt of Scotland (and other Lowland areas) - those Stewarts were never part of a clan. Not every Scottish name was part of the clan system. Netherby, I seem to recall is in Yorkshire. Which is quite a distance (in bygone days) from the Borders... I wonder if there is another 'Netherby' nearer the borders? Good luck with your research

I am not sure if there is another Netherby near the borders. Not unless the person who did my family Tree is confused. I know they explain where my name came from and how it's a placename that originated from The Graham of Netherby Hall. Then it went on to say how unruly my family was and how they reived the border, then they were exiled to Ireland because of their trouble making. Then they went back and forth and then finally to america in the late 17th-18th century. Some were sold into slavery etc...All this hunting and searching as been quite exasperating to say the least....needless to say my family got around!!! LOL!!
Thank you for your input, I do appreciate it very much! Char |

I wish I COULD help! But, as I say, I have never come across the name in Scotland.... so it may be quite an unusual one.
I suppose like many Scots, I'm lucky.... my family members are buried in local churchyards - or earlier generations are buried only a car-ride from where we live now.... Good luck with your research ![]() |

Netherby Hall - good you added the B ;)
Netherby Hall is a stately hall made of red stones, with great windows. It was built by the Grahams of Netherby and is to be found in Cumbria. It once was a fortress tower seized by this family, they built the Hall as seen now round this old tower.
There is a branch of the Grahams called the Grahams of Netherby, their story begins with legend-like Lang Will (later made Graham of Stuble). His eldest son, Richard, was the first Graham of Netherby. His story can be found in John Grahams "conditions of the border at the union", which was published as far as I know in 1905. The story of Richard is an interesting one and he managed, as some other Grahams, to win himself a prize upon his head... I can post this story later here, if you are interested. You can see pictures of Netherby Hall and read a bit of its history at: http://www.thecumbriadirectory.com You could also contact Clan Graham association, if you want.

The Neathery trouble makers
Their is no "Neathery" clan we are from the Graham clan. Our ancestors were border reivers, clansmen who guarded the border between England and Scotland, and pushed the English back over. Charles warned them if they didn't stop they would be kicked out they didn't and were exhiled to Ireland; northern to be exact I believe west of Belfast. Our family took the name of the area we were from, the Netherby area, Netherby hall is part of that as was Mudgock castle near Sterling. The exhiled snuck back in and continued their rebellion against the crown and were told to leave except this time if they come back they die. They left, went back to Ireland and from there went to America starting in the late 1600's and early 1700's settling mainly in Virginia. I hope this helps.
