Just wondering if there is anyone out there who has any information for me on any relatives of the 1st Baron Campbell of St Andrews, his sister Lindsay(married David Graham Johnstone) was my Great Great Great Great Grandmother. I have tried writing to the current Baron Campbell(and Stratheden as the title is now) but with no luck, and would very much like any information on other members of the family. Many thanks

Hello Jibby,
sorry for my delay in replying, I will try to help you, though I cannot promise anything. I am not very much into any Cambell history, but I could check it for you, maybe I could do via his sister Lindsay. Have you ever tried any church registres? NO PROMISES, I can't tell if I will be successful, but I will try, okay?

Thanks Jacobitedreamer, that would be great. I haven't used any church registers, I have only really used the internet and a distant cousin in New Zealand, and don't really know where to start. I have found out quite a lot about John, 1st Baron Campbell of St Andrews as there is lots of information about him on the internet and I also have his autobiography. My family also have portraits and various books written and signed by him to members of his family(a nephew I think!) and some newspaper clippings about him, his father and brother. My Great Great Grandfather John Campbell Johnstone was the great Nephew of 1st Baron Campell(his mother Lindsay being the Barons sister) and my Great Great Grandfather had two brothers. Pearson Campbell Johnstone, of whom there is no trace except that we belive he was a prison warden with the Royal Navy, and Halliburton who was kidnapped by bandits in South America and murdered at 19. This last piece of information has come to me by word of mouth from my great uncle and there is also no trace of this brother anywhere that I can find. So any information on these family members would be fantastic. Thanks in advance and if I can help any further let me know.
Caroline

Hello, Jibby
I'm not sure where you are based in the world, but the Clan Campbell Society, North America has an extensive website - with links to other Campbell sites.

Re: Hello, Jibby
That's Polwarth! Thanks, I think this could help Jibby a lot.
Jibby I will ask a friend of mine who is a bit into all sorts of history if he can help me to help you. It'll take time, I think, but I'll try to dig out what I can.

I am new to this site and did not finish before the page timed out. I wanted to add that the children of David Johnston and Lindsay Campbell (all born in Hackney, London) were: George (1809 and alive in 1818, but not in 1839), David Graham (1811), Magdalene (1813, probably died early), Magdalene and Eliza (1815), John Campbell (1817), Jane (1819), Frederick (1824) and Mary Campbell (1827). The years are the year of baptism, extracted from the St John's Hackney parish register. David and Lindsay moved back to Scotland, to Edinburgh, about 1829 or 1830 where John Campbell went to school before he entered the service of the East India Company. He resigned in 1853 to settle in New Zealand. I wonder where in the world you are living? I am also a descendent of John CAmpbell Johnstone but no longer live in New Zealand, though return there often. P. |

It seems that the first part of my reply to your posting went off into the ether and is lost. Here is the start again, maybe with some repetition. I am a greatgranddaughter of John Campbell Johnstone and for some years have been working on his story. I have recently published a book on John Campbell Johnstone's daughter-in-law which contains some information on his background. I am just finishing a short biography on John Campbell for a book being put together on his descendents. I should first point out that his parents were David Johnston and Lindsay Campbell (sister of the Baron) married in Cupar Fife in 1807. (It is interesting to note that the 'e' was not added to the name until after the death of David (1839)and Lindsay (1843), when all the children seem to have added it at the same time.) After their mariage, David and Lindsay went to live in Hackney, London where all their children were presumably born and all were baptized at St John's Hackney. Hope some of this is useful to you P. |
