A Daniell family history book that I have says my family can be traced back to a Robert Daniell (1646-1718) who came from Scotland to Charles Town [Charleston], South Carolina in 1679. Some of us have wondered about a connection between the Daniel and Daniell names and have wondered where the second L went!
I've found this rather humerous account in the book "Eminent Georgians", published in 1937 by the Southern Society for Research and History: "The Daniell Family of Georgia... is a branch of one of South Carolina's most distinguished families. The family originally came from England, where its genealogy is traceable to the Knights of the Norman Conquest. The name was originally spelled DeAnvers and down through the centuries was changed first to Danyell then to the present spelling of Daniell. There is a family tradition that on account of a political issue over which two brothers differed, one dropped an L from the name and they agreed that 'henceforth they would be no kin'. This tradition appears to be founded in the division among the English people at the time of Cromwell. The Daniels of Virginia claim that their ancestor supported Cromwell, so it must be that the ancestor of the Daniells was loyal to his king. The progenitor of the Daniell family in America was Robert Daniell of Charleston, South Carolina..." So ole Cromwell even caused dissent on this side of the pond! LOL! My family is traceable back to this Robert Daniell fellow, but the book quoted says they're from England while my distant cousin's research says Scotland. I wish I knew for sure, but at least there is a definate connection between me and the UK that I dearly love! Susan |

Oh well, these and other times have caused more than just an L to fall. But thereīs now and futureīs ahead and so letīs hope that all further changes in names and other things may have peaceful and nice reasons.
Thanks for the info!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
