Tell me about it ! Just before the team got their advanced-winners' bonuses, got their free cars and got their houses carpeted gratis by Carpet Kingdom then did their winners rehearsal in Glasgow, all
before taking off for Argentina, I even went and enthusiastically got the
Scotland '78 perm ! (as worn by Alan Rough, Graeme Souness and various others. I think Archie Gemmill had half a perm as he was going bald). After our exit at Group Stage, I had to wait months for the bloody thing to grow out and all that time I had to look in the mirror each day as my hair mocked me and made me re-live the memories of Peru and Iran and Ally McLeod with his head in his hands to the tune of Elton John's
"What do I have to do to make you love me ?"
A great and funny moment for England and Jimmy Hill ! We deserved the ridicule to be honest and I believe we've collectively never got over it, compounded in recent times by Dirti Berti Vogts !
