This is a response to an older query about David and Grace Donald on 16 Stock St., Paisley, 1881 census.

I have researched this family. David and Grace (Mehan) Donald are my great grandparents. Fred, John, and Sam are my granduncles. Their younger sister, Susan-Ann was born in late April of 1881 just after the census was made and she is my father's mother. I knew Fred reasonably well (for a child and teenager) and met Sam on occaison. John died, unamrreid, before I was born. Only Sam and Susan had children; John did not marry and Fred was childless.

David was from Barrhead born 1846, although I can't find a birth or census record for Barrhead, but both he and his brother John give Barrhead as their birthplace. His father was another David and mother Susan McKenzie. His father was a ""town missionary" -- Presbyterian of some sort.

David was a skilled workman and controlled the furnaces that pumped the steam to the thread mills at Coats and Clark. He was sent to their Newark plant by the company and settled there in 1883, He died in a flu epidemic in 1893. Grace died there in 1896, and the older children went to work.

David was a poet, writing in Lowland Scot. The only one I have is "The Aurtherlies the Byes that can play the fitbal" and it is quite good.

About 30 descendants from Sam's son, Joe, and my grandmother, who married Wilson R. Brown.

David and Susan Donald had, for sure, David, John (1855-1925) ARchibald,)1855.?), and Samuel )1851*?) and probable Mary Ann and Jane. John was born in Barrhead (By census taken elsewhere) and lived in Ayr and then Paisley. Married Isabella Angus Apr. 30, 1880 in Paisley.
