If you do a search on this forum (Clans) - from the blue bar at the top of the page, with the word 'Wallace' - there are loads of threads on the topic.
The only way to check your husband's ancestry (and you are right to be sceptical about the William Wallace relationship!) is to start at his generation, then his father's and so on, back to the original immigrant to your country. Then perhaps via ship's records, immigration records, you could find out excactly where (or even IF!) his family originated in Scotland and then old parish registers, or the GRO registers might help you find out more info.
