"Decline and Fall" is very readable, but it's not taken very seriously, at least not anymore. It's a classic of literature perhaps, but not a good resource.

Deira and Bernicia didn't completely disappear. In fact, it was their merger which created Northumbria, and corresponded (roughly) to their boundaries. The Marches and "West Wales" (i.e. Cornwall) have both shrunk in size, and their borders have fluctuated much more perhaps.

There are in fact records of the expulsion of the Cornish from Exeter, although there is controversy over how long the language persisted in Devon.
