Who's had plantains? (they are like a banana but harder and must be cooked before eating).
I had them in Oaxaca, Mexico... they would take the ripe ones which are very sweet and fry them in butter with cinnamon. Unlike bananas, they hold their texture.
My housemate's family is Cuban, and they have them too but prepare them very differently.... they take them green and slice them and deep fry them in oil. They are not sweet at all and much more like a chip.
