My wee bookie says,
Their roots were Norman. their ancestor was ALAIN, seneschal of Dol and they settled in Scotland during the reign of David 1st(1124 to 1153). The clan takes its name from the hereditary post of High Steward (as Pol said) which the family held from the 12th century.
