I think I'd better apologise now. 11 o' clock at night on a weekday is evidently a bad time for me to post about emotive issues! I think it was the comment about how England would leave the UK tomorrow were it not profitable (with the "us and they" mentality) that set me off. The phrase "dastardly English" was sarcasm. Sorry, I'll not do that again.
I do think that you ignore one vital aspect of the UK. It's not just an economic/political alliance you can break off just like that - it's a state which also has a nation attached. You can't ignore the "British nation" when trying to deal with the "Scottish nation."
