Taking place each year on the 30th of April, the Beltane festival has its roots in Scottish and Irish Gaelic pre-Christian traditions with the Gaelic-Celtic name meaning 'bright/sacred fire'. The purpose of the festival is to celebrate the end of winter and the rejuvenating qualities of spring.
Organized by the Beltane Fire Society, each year around 12 thousand people gather to join in this special occasion which includes a procession with fire being an integral element, drumming and general revelry on Calton Hill.
