Canadian Consulate

If you are considering traveling to Canada from Scotland, you will first need to visit the Canadian Consulate in Scotland to ensure that you have all the necessary paperwork in order.

Those looking to obtain a ‘permanent’ Canadian visa will have to fulfill certain requirements. Canada has adopted a very positive outlook on attracting skilled professionals and will gladly grant a permanent residency to a skilled worker who fulfills the necessary requirements. If you are attempting to live and work in Canada for a few years or longer, you should try to gain a skilled worker class visa before leaving Scotland. This will mean that once you meet the pass mark of 67 points, you will be eligible to apply for permanent residency. If your trip is strictly business, you should try to obtain a business class visa as an investor, an entrepreneur or a self-employed individual. Successful applicants will then later be able to pass the Business Points Test. If you wish to move to the country to join your family, you should apply for a Family Class Visa. While this visa requires that you are sponsored by an eligible Canadian citizen or permanent resident initially, it will allow you to eventually become a permanent resident yourself. Keep in mind, however, that applicants for this sort of visa will have to undergo a security and medical check.

Those wishing to visit the country on holiday or to work temporarily or study in Canada, will have apply for a Temporary Canadian Visa under the correct category. Canadian travel visas require that you have a medical examination prior to entering the country. If you want to work and travel, a Working Holiday Program is likely the best option as this allows you to have access to incidental work as you travel. However, applicants have to be under thirty years of age to enjoy a successful application. Those wishing to study in Canada for more than six months of a year will have to obtain a study permit which will allow them to do so. Once again, a medical examination will be necessary to gain such a permit.

The Canadian Consulate in Scotland is located in Burness in 50 Lothian Road in Edinburgh. The physical and postal address, should you wish to write to the embassy or visit it in person, is as follows:
