Don't Miss Shetland Fiddle Frenzy

The fifth Shetland Fiddle Frenzy will take place between the 4th and the 10th of August 2008. The success it has enjoyed over the last few years has seen a growing number of international participants and the return of some who are now regular faces at this fantastic festival in Scotland. The Shetland Fiddle Frenzy is as much a fiddle school as it is a festival. Participants not only have the opportunity to learn from the best, but enjoy masterful and energetic performances. It is a festival for fiddle players and fiddle loving audiences.

The Shetland Fiddle Frenzy offers “students” an entire package of fun, education and relaxation. It also gives visitors the chance to learn about the history of Shetland fiddling and the heritage and culture of the islands. Fans, fiddlers and aspiring fiddlers congregate at the Shetland Fiddle Frenzy to share the passion for music and take part in the many workshops and excursions available.

During the Shetland Fiddle Frenzy, visitors get to tour the island, meeting like-minded individuals, exploring the wildlife and scenery, and getting to know traditional musicians such as Catriona Macdonald, Gibby Hutchinson, The Cullivoe Fiddlers, Jenna Reid and many more. For those are not taking part in the tutorial sessions for fiddlers, other activities will be available such as crafts workshops, traditional dancing, guided tours, sheep shearing, storytelling and peat casting. In the evenings, the stages of the various venues come alive with concerts, performances and world class musicians.

For the fiddlers, there are a variety of workshops and sessions to attend, ranging in difficulty levels from beginners courses to fast, advanced courses. Other workshops offer accompaniment classes, technique refinement and different styles. Throughout the sessions, fiddlers will be taught to play traditional Shetland Fiddling songs and have the opportunity to perform with some of the guest artists at the festival. Tutors include the likes of Catriona Macdonald, Jenna Reid, Eunice Henderson, Pauleen Wiseman, Bryan Gear, Bernadette Porter, Violet Tulloch, Mark Laurenson, Annbjorg Lien, Jim Leask, Margaret Scollay, Kevin Mackenzie and John Hutchinson.

The Shetland Fiddle Frenzy is a fantastic school for fiddlers and a festival that promotes the art of traditional fiddling. For six days and six nights, participants get to eat, sleep and breathe the instrument that is interwoven with the tradition of the islands.
