Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art

The John Watson Institution was established in the year 1822 and was constructed according to the vision and drawings presented by William Burn, during the years 1825 to 1828. In the 1980s, the neo-classical building was converted into the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. As one of the national art galleries in Scotland, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, hosts an extensive collection of art in the form of paintings, graphic artwork, prints and sculptures. Some of the art has been collected internationally but also exhibits spectacular Scottish pieces.

The gallery also has beautifully landscaped gardens. Interestingly, the front lawn has been awarded the Gulbenkian Prize for the most spectacular Landform sculpture that was designed and created by Rachel Whiteread, Barbara Hepworth, Tony Cragg and Henry Moore. The gardens also contain breathtaking sculptures that are weatherproof and therefore the gallery offers visitors an unforgettable outdoor art experience. The café and bookshop complete the stunning gardens.

The artwork within the gallery includes works such as expressionist art by Kirchner, Nolde and Barlach, with talented oil painting artists such as Goncharova and French artists to the likes of Derain and Bonnard. Classic and sought after works by Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst and Rene Magritte are also displayed at the National Gallery of Modern Art. Over the years, the collection has grown extensively and has approximately 5 000 pieces of art that range from paintings, sculptures and kinetic sculptures.

Interesting exhibitions are held at most of the galleries in Scotland, but the National Gallery of Modern Art prides itself of exhibiting not only breathtaking permanent collections that include legendary artists such as Picasso, and also the world respected Mondrian, and other works that have created by talents that include Josef Albers and Bridget Riley. But temporary and permanent, intriguing exhibits such as the Off the Wall exhibition that featured art that is displayed from the ceiling and floor based work, that is created to provoke thoughts and interest in visitors. Most known for these works, are the artists Nathan Coley and Martin Creed. When visiting the galleries in Scotland, be sure to drop into the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
